Toxic Parenting

Toxic parenting has been around for centuries but it is only in the last 20 -30 years that it is becoming recognised and has been given a name. Toxic parenting can be described as a combination of the following:

1) When a parent creates a negative and stressful home environment for the child and fails to protect them from it.

2) When a child experiences unhappiness, misery and stress because of their parents.

3) When a parent puts their own needs before that of their child.

4) When a parent is manipulative, abusive, neglectful, uncaring and emotionally unavailable for their child and they employ guilt, fear and belittling to get their child to do what they want.

5) When a parent exercises self-centered actions and behaviour and shows narcissistic traits towards their child.

Toxic parenting is an umbrella term for many different types of syndromes. This Help Guide discusses 3 different syndromes. Please click on the boxes below and you will be taken to the write up of the syndrome you have chosen.
