Safeguarding For A Child In Need

A child in need is a child that is disabled, has special educational needs, has medical needs and is one that if provisions are not provided for them or services not made available to them they will underachieve in education, their health and wellbeing will suffer and their development is likely to be impaired.

This Help Guide will give you an insight into the local authority’s responsibility towards children in need and what help is available out there for you.

BOX 1 – Here we will explain what a child protection conference is, why and when it is held, the outcome and the parents role. We will also go over what a child protection plan is and what a child in need plan is.

BOX 2 – This webpage will discuss how an advocate can help a child in need in various settings from school to local authority meetings about the child.

BOXES 3 & 4 – The government and local authorities pay particular attention to the education requirements of children in need.  The education arena is where many children in need can fail to attain academic achievement unless provisions, extra care and special measures are put in place. We have not written a separate section about the specifics of safeguarding children in need with regards to education. This has been written about throughout the sections providing education for children with special educational needs & disabilities and children with medical needs.

BOX 5 – This webpage will explain what you can do if your child is discriminated against and/or has be given inadequate care.
