WHAT IS NSPCC?

The NSPCC is short for the national society for the prevention of cruelty to children.

The NSPCC is a children’s charity.

What does the NSPCC do?

The main function of the NSPCC is the following:

  1. The prevention of children being abused.
  2. The protection of children who have been abused.
  3. To protect children who are at risk. 

The NSPCC does this in many ways.

  1. They provide schools with online courses to teach them how to identify and protect abused children.
  2. They help children who have been abused move on in life.
  3. They support parents to care for their children.
  4. They help professionals who work with abused children make decisions.   
  5. They work to prevent abuse from occurring in the first place.

Can you report abuse to the NSPCC directly?

Yes you can.

Anyone can call the helpline number and report abuse. The number is 0808 800 5000. The lines are open 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 2pm on Saturday and Sunday.

What will the NSPCC do if you report abuse?

When the NSPCC are informed that abuse is occurring or that a child is at risk they can do the following:

  1. Report the abuse to social services where the child is living.
  2. Report the abuse to the police. They will do this if a child is in immediate danger.
  3. They can offer support, advice and help to the individual who has called. 

Does the NSPCC have statutory powers?

Yes they do. The NSPCC can make an application to the court for a care order to remove a child at risk of abuse from the individuals who may be or are abusing the child. 

WHAT IS CHILDLINE?

As stated above childline became part of the NSPCC in 2006.

Childline is a 24 hour 7 days a week free, confidential counselling service for children and young people up to the age of 19 years. It was founded by Esther Rantzen in 1986. 

Children can call, email or talk 1-2-1 online chat to a trained counsellor about any issue, however big or small, that is disturbing, upsetting, stressing out or troubling a child.

Childline will not inform parents what their child has said. They will only call the police or social services where they feel a child is in danger or will be in danger.

Childline calls are not recorded, are free, and the number will not show up on the phone bill.

WHAT IS FAMILY LIVES?

Family lives is a charity that provides help, support and guidance for parents on many topics and issues of concern. Family lives are not connected to social services, they do not have any statutory powers and cannot give advice or legal or medical issues. 

They used to be known as parentline.

WHAT IS VICTIM SUPPORT?

Victim support is a charity that can help individuals who have been the victim of a crime or a traumatic event whether it has been reported to the police or not. If you are a witness to a crime you can also call victim support. They have a free confidential support telephone line and live chat.
