Stalking

 

WHAT IS STALKING?

Stalking is a form of harassment that is repeated or done consistently. In other words it has happened more than once. It can also be the case where the perpetrator is not listening to you asking them to stop.

Stalking can involve the following:

  1. Sending repeated unwanted emails and letters to an individual 
  2. Repeatedly calling an individual 
  3. Following an individual on a constant basis and hanging about where they will be. 
  4. Sending unwanted gifts
  5. Cyber stalking online, in a chat room, and on social media.
  6. Sending many abusive text messages.
  7. Turning up uninvited to your home again and again. 
  8. Spying on you

Often the perpetrator can be obsessive and fixated with you.

Stalking is illegal and you can report the perpetrator.

HOW CAN A STALKER MAKE YOU FEEL?

There are many emotions that being stalked can bring out. Some are:

  1. Scared.
  2. Threatened.
  3. On edge
  4. Distressed
  5. Unsafe
  6. Vulnerable
  7. Pestered
  8. Anxious

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY ABOUT STALKING?

Under the protection from harassment act 1997 it is illegal to stalk someone.

WHO CAN YOU REPORT STALKING TO?

There are many ways you can report stalking:

You can call the police

You can dial 999 if you or your child is at immediate risk or a crime has been committed. Alternatively if there is no emergency you can dial 101 or file a report online.

You can contact the NSPCC If your child is being stalked you can contact the NSPCC and speak to them about your concerns and report a stalker. If the child is in danger they will call the police.
